Artists were invited to submit images for a juried art exhibition in Mondrian’s birthplace: Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Exhibition will take place in April/May 2015 at Archipel Gallery.
One hundred years ago in 1915 Mondrian exhibited his first abstracted paintings in Holland: the Pier & Ocean series. Artists were asked to show how their work reflects any aspect of this ground-breaking artist’s transition from representational to abstract work. Accompanying this exhibition is a contemporary art route along the canals of Amersfoort, also inspired by Mondrian’s work, May to September.
My contribution is based on exploration of a tessellation diagram, a computer generated grid created by recursively executing a random split on parent rectangle area with a thingie called dust-line (random directional dot cluster progression) along a randomly selected split course. Portions of a grid are then hand painted to produce the final image (in case of 895624 Levels of Abstraction With a Little Red Square, the first in series) or a starting point of a mixed media intervention with photographic elements resulting in final digital image.
In fact, the process of creating these works could easily be called Mondrian reversed since it starts from abstract computer generated pattern and proceeds towards non-abstract by incorporating photographic fragments.
